What is Varithena Ablation?
Varithena Ablation is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins caused by venous reflux, chronic venous insufficiency. It uses a specially formulated, prescription microfoam that is injected directly into the diseased vein. The foam fills and collapses the vein, redirecting blood flow to healthier nearby veins. This FDA-approved treatment does not require incisions, heat, or tumescent anesthesia, and is ideal for treating veins that are difficult to manage with other techniques, including tortuous veins.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Varithena treatment is performed in-office and usually takes less than an hour. After the treatment area is cleansed, your provider will use ultrasound guidance to inject the microfoam into the affected vein. Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. You’ll be encouraged to walk shortly afterward and can resume normal day-to-day activities immediately. However, it’s important to avoid strenuous leg exercises, heavy lifting, and swimming for at least two weeks post-treatment to support proper healing and ensure the best possible results.
