What Should You Avoid After Ultherapy?

It’s hard to keep your skin looking young and healthy. Sun damage, wrinkles, and age spots can make you look older than you feel. The good news is that you don’t have to live with aging skin. There are treatments available that can help you look younger and more refreshed. At R Shaheen Vascular in Mountain View, CA, we offer Ultherapy, a non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound technology to lift and tighten the skin on your face, upper chest, and neck.

What Should You Avoid After Ultherapy?

1. Wearing Makeup for 24 Hours After Treatment

Immediately after your treatment, it is crucial to keep your skin clean and natural. Makeup products can interfere with your treatment results in several ways. First, they can irritate the treated area and cause redness and swelling. Second, they can clog pores and trap dirt and oil, which can lead to breakouts.

Finally, makeup can simply get in the way of the healing process, making it harder for your skin to recover from the treatment. By avoiding makeup for 24 hours after the treatment, you can help ensure that you get the best possible results from your treatment.

2. Exposing Yourself to the Sun for at Least Two Weeks After Treatment

The sun can interfere with the results of the treatment, causing the skin to heal more slowly and unevenly. In addition, the sun can also increase the risk of side effects such as bruising and swelling. To protect your skin, be sure to wear sunscreen with a high SPF and limit your time outdoors. If you must be in the sun, be sure to wear protective clothing such as a hat or long-sleeved shirt.

3. Doing Other Facial Treatments for Six Months Following Treatment

If you’ve recently had Ultherapy treatment, it’s crucial to wait at least six weeks before having any other facial treatments done. This is because additional facial treatments can increase your skin’s sensitivity, making it more vulnerable to irritation. For example, treatments such as laser resurfacing and microdermabrasion can cause swelling, redness, and even blistering if done too soon after the treatment. In addition, these techniques can interfere with the healing process, making the treatment less effective.

4. Alcohol for 24 Hours Prior to and After Treatment

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes the body to lose fluids. When the body is dehydrated, it’s not able to function as efficiently. This can lead to a host of problems, including dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and a dull complexion. Alcohol also speeds up the aging process by damaging collagen and elastin. In addition, alcohol constricts blood vessels, which can lead to inflammation and redness after treatment.

5. Caffeine for 24 Hours Prior to and After Treatment

Although moderate amounts of caffeine are not typically harmful, it is crucial to avoid caffeine for 24 hours prior to and after treatment. This is because Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to heat the tissue beneath the skin’s surface. Caffeine can cause blood vessels to constrict, which may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

In addition, caffeine can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, which may make you more susceptible to side effects such as dizziness or nausea. If you typically consume caffeinated beverages, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to detox before your treatment.

6. Strenuous Exercise for 24 Hours After Treatment

Strenuous exercise can increase the risk of side effects such as bruising, swelling, and redness. It can also lead to discomfort and pain at the treatment site. In addition, strenuous exercise can cause the skin to sweat excessively, which can further promote the development of side effects.

To minimize the risk of adverse effects, it is best to avoid vigorous activity for at least a day after treatment. Light exercise, such as walking, is generally safe and can actually help to improve circulation and promote healing.

7. Routine Use of Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Anti-inflammatory medications are often used to help manage pain and swelling. However, there are a few things to be aware of before using these medications routinely. First, it is essential to understand that inflammation is a normal response of the body to injury or illness. This means that some level of inflammation is actually beneficial, as it helps the body to heal.

Additionally, anti-inflammatory medications can interfere with the body’s natural healing process. Therefore, it is generally advisable to use these medications only when absolutely necessary.

8. Touching or Rubbing Your Face Immediately After Treatment

The risk of infection is highest during the first 24 hours after treatment, so it is crucial to keep the area clean and free of bacteria. Touching or rubbing the treated area can also cause irritation and redness. If you must touch your face, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly first.

9. Smoking Cigarettes

Cigarette smoking has many adverse effects on our skin. The chemicals in cigarettes damage collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that give our skin its firmness and elasticity. This damage leads to wrinkles, sagging skin, and an overall dull and unhealthy appearance. In addition, cigarette smoke decreases blood flow to the skin, which means that the skin cells are not getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly.

If you smoke cigarettes after treatment, the toxins in the smoke will damage the new collagen and elastin fibers, hindering the results of the treatment. Thus, if you want to get the most out of your skin rejuvenation efforts, we ask that you find a way to quit smoking cigarettes.

10. Tanning

Tanning of any kind is not recommended for at least two weeks after treatment. This is because the ultraviolet rays can interfere with the results of the treatment by causing the skin to produce more melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color, and it acts as a natural sunscreen. The more melanin your skin produces, the darker it becomes.

The UV rays from tanning beds and sun exposure can also trigger skin inflammation. In addition, tanning can cause the skin to become dry and irritated, as well as cause premature aging of the skin. This can make it more difficult to achieve desired results from the treatment.

11. Heavy Moisturizers

We recommend using a light, oil-free moisturizer that will not interfere with your treatment results. You may also want to avoid using any products that contain retinol or other exfoliating agents for at least 48 hours after treatment, as these products can cause irritation and redness.

What Ultherapy Is

Collagen is a protein that gives the skin its structure and strength. As we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen, which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. The treatment works by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the deep layers of the skin using a medical device. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, which begins to produce new collagen. The results are natural-looking and will continue to improve over the next few months as new collagen is produced.

What Are the Benefits?

There are many benefits of this treatment, including:

  • Non-invasive
  • FDA-approved
  • Effective
  • Customizable
  • No downtime

How Long Will Results Last After Treatment?

The results of the treatment are not immediate, but over the course of two to three months, you will see a visible tightening and lifting of the skin on the face, neck, and brow. Most patients see optimal results at six months post-treatment, and results will last for up to two years.

However, everyone experiences aging differently, so while some patients may see long-lasting results after one treatment session, others may need to repeat the treatment once a year to maintain their results.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best way to determine whether or not this skin rejuvenation treatment is a good option is to consult with us. During your consultation, we will assess your skin type, the condition of your skin, and your overall goals. With this information, we can help you decide if the treatment is the best option for you.
In general, this treatment is most effective for people with mild to moderate skin laxity. If you have significant skin laxity, you may be better suited for a different treatment.

Need a More Youthful Appearance? We Can Help!

Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in firmer, tighter, and smoother skin. The treatment is non-invasive and requires no downtime, making it an ideal solution for busy adults who want to maintain their youthful appearance.
